Project Summary:
The contract comprised the construction of new grade separated interchanges at four junctions namely Abu Shagara junction, Yarmook junction, Flying Saucer Junction and Cultural Square Junction.
The 3 level grade separated interchange at Abu Shagara Junction has an Underpass along the King Abdul Aziz Road with a signalized junction at grade above the underpass and a viaduct along Al Wahda Road spanning across the above signalized junction and extending to span over another new signalized junction at Yarmook Junction. The 550 m long Underpass consists of a main box section and two U-shaped approaches of 50m and 500m length respectively. The road below the viaduct providing access to the shops, properties, signalized junctions and internal roads is accomplished by means of at grade slip roads beside the viaduct ramps.
The Interchange at Flying Saucer Junction consists of a similar viaduct along the Al Wahda road as that of the middle zone of Abu Shagara Viaduct with a length of 550m.
The Cultural Square interchange consists of an underpass along Al Wahda Street, passing below the Cultural Square Roundabout. The ramp portion of the tunnel is approximately 500m long on either side with a closed tunnel of length of 175m.
The above works involve major traffic management measures, relocation/protection of existing services and incorporating of new major services.
Following are the major services laid down in the project:
- 2000 mm dia GRP storm water line with concrete surround
- 1100 mm dia GRP storm water line
- 1200 mm dia TWIN HDPE water line
- 200 mm to 600 mm dia storm water gravity lines
- 100 mm to 800 mm dia water transmission & distribution lines
- Street lighting poles/foundations
- Traffic signal systems
- 2 pumping stations in the underpass
- Etisalat ducts/joint boxes/manholes
- 400 to 600 mm dia foul sewer pumping mains
- Protection of 132 kv electric cables
The project also comprises the conversion of 15 Round-Abouts to signalized intersections around the city and industrial areas of Sharjah together with widening of approx: 25 km of roads from 2 lane to 3 lanes, including the protection of services.
The project also has a pedestrian underpass across Al Wahda Street.
